What Causes Toenail Fungus?

Toenail fungus can be ugly and uncomfortable. You may not want to show off your feet. If you have toenail fungus, don’t worry. Your foot and ankle specialist can help. Dr. Peter Fillerup and Dr. Casey Fillerup at Foot & Ankle Center of the Central Coast in Santa Maria, CA, provide a wide range of podiatry services, including treatment of toenail fungus.

What You Need To Know About Toenail Fungus

You can develop toenail fungus from exposure to a fungus that thrives in warm, moist places. The fungus is abundant in places like public pools, gyms, and locker rooms, which is why it’s important to always wear footwear in public areas.

The fungus starts out as a small white or yellow spot underneath your toenail. The spot grows larger as the fungus burrows deeper underneath your toenail. As the fungus grows, your toenail will begin to change and look dark, thick, crumbly, and deformed.

If you notice changes in your toenail that look like toenail fungus, it’s time to see your foot and ankle specialist, who may recommend:

  • Prescription oral antifungal medications to kill the fungus infecting your toenail
  • Prescription topical antifungal treatments to kill the underlying fungus
  • Removing the infected nail surgically to promote growth of a new, healthy toenail
  • Laser and light therapy to kill the underlying fungus and keep it from returning

Remember that you can do a lot to prevent toenail fungus if you:

  • Keep your feet clean and dry
  • Use foot powder to reduce sweating
  • Wear moisture-wicking socks or open shoes
  • Wear flip flops in public areas like showers and swimming pools
  • Examine your nails, toes, and feet daily for signs of toenail fungus
